A rally sign has a completely different reader from a yard sign. It is read by a camera at the back of a room, in a crowd, at whatever angle a photographer gets — so it wants a short line, enormous type and a contrast that survives compression on a screen. Detail that works on a lawn disappears entirely here.

It also has to be held. Two hours of holding a panel above shoulder height is genuinely tiring, so weight matters more than it does anywhere else in this trade, and the handle matters most of all. A stapled paint stick works loose and the staple is a hazard in a crowd; a die-cut hand-hold in the panel itself, or a properly fixed handle, does not.
