This is the sign everybody pictures: a corrugated plastic panel on a wire H-stake, planted by the hundred. What separates a run that stands through the season from a run that ends up in a ditch is a single manufacturing decision that never appears on a proof.

Corrugated plastic has hollow flutes running in one direction only, and the two legs of an H-stake slide up inside them. If the sheet was cut with the flutes horizontal — which happens constantly, because a printer gets more signs out of a sheet that way — the stake has nothing to grip. The sign spins on the wire, leans within a day, and is gone in the first weather. We cut flutes vertical as standard and put it on the quote in writing.

The stake is the other half and it is quoted the same way. Wire gauge, leg length and whether the shoulders are welded are real numbers; heavy duty is not.
